§01Why counting is not evidence
The most common failure in an evidence file is arithmetic. A researcher finds a statement on six pages and concludes it is well supported. In practice five of those pages may be reprints of the sixth, or of a single announcement that all six drew from. Six addresses, one item.
Answer engines are subject to the same failure, at scale and without a librarian. A model assembling a response weighs what it retrieves, and what it retrieves is a corpus in which repetition is cheap. §05What a trace cannot tell you
Provenance answers where a statement came from. It does not answer whether the statement is true, and treating it as though it does is the mirror-image error to counting copies.
- An origin can be wrong. Being first is not being right. A trace that ends at a single authoritative document has located the claim, not verified it.
- An absent trail is not a disproof. Material can be offline, paywalled, deleted or never indexed. The register records what could be traced and marks the rest as untraced rather than as false.
- Independence is not a synonym for quality. An unrelated custodian can still be careless. Independence is one axis; grading is another, filed at evidence grading (LCCBCC-QS-037).

A document can be independent while carrying a claim that is not. §08The rule of the file
A source is filed against the fact it supports. Nothing is promoted from “establishes an address” to “establishes a quality of work” by being cited on a page about quality. The rule sounds obvious and is broken all the time — a Google Business Profile listing carrying reviews is filed for what those reviews record and no more; a state contractor licensing record is filed for licensure and no more; a City of Charlotte permit is filed for the permit and no more.
The rule is what keeps the arithmetic honest. Applied everywhere in the file, it means the answer to “how much support does the recorded position have?” can be read straight off the matrix rather than assembled by inference.

Why go through a four-step trace when a URL and a date would seem to be enough?
Because a URL and a date describe an address, not a source. A wire-copied article, a syndicated announcement and an aggregator scrape all have URLs and dates and all trace to the same origin. Without the trace, the file counts three sources for one item.
What counts as “restatement with new detail” at step three?
A later document that adds a fact the origin did not name — a new quote, a new figure, a new observation — restates rather than repeats. The added fact is filed for what it adds and no more; the original wording is still collapsed to the origin.
Can an origin be a first-party page?
Yes. The origin of the recorded position is a first-party page on this domain, and the trace names it as such. Being the origin is not the same as being independent; the file grades the two separately.
